Eyelid Surgery

Eyes are the most defining feature of the face.  Aging and heredity can have a significant impact on the eyes and contribute to changes that reflect a tired appearance.   Cosmetic eyelid surgery (known as Blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and drooping skin of the upper eyelids, adjusts excess skin, muscle and fat of the lower eyelids, thereby contributing to a more alert and youthful appearance.

Reasons for Considering Eyelid Surgery:

  • A tired appearance caused by drooping upper eyelids
  • "Bags" under the eyes
  • Excessive skin surrounding the eyelids.
  • Impaired vision

The first step is a Consultation with Dr. Connors.  At this time, he will determine the options available to improve the appearance of your eyelids.  Patients may be candidates for Upper Eyelid, Lower Eyelid Surgery or a combined approach.  Cosmetic eyelid surgery may be done along with other facial procedures such as facelift and/or brow lift.  Some people have hereditary traits that indicate eyelid surgery is beneficial when in their 20's or 30's.

General Procedure

Dr. Connors performs eyelid surgery in his fully-accredited surgical facility under anesthesia.  Incisions are made within the natural eyelid fold of the upper eyelid in order to removed fat and loose skin.  The lower eyelid's excess skin, muscle and fat are addressed through an incision that is hidden just below the lower eyelashes.  The surgery generally takes about one to three hours; if additional cosmetic procedures are being performed, the procedure could last longer.

Complete recovery may take a few weeks. Swelling, bruising and some discomfort are part of the recovery process and can be alleviated with cold compresses and appropriate medication as needed.  Most patients are back to their normal routine within 10 days as healing continues and swelling resolves.

Recovery Process

Normally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and temporary restrictions in daily activities due to some swelling, bruising and eye dryness.  Medications and cold compresses are advised after surgery to aid in healing. While complications are rare, patients can minimize the risk for potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions given after the surgery.
