BREAST AUGMENTATION, also known as Augmentation Mammoplasty, is the procedure of choice for women who want to enlarge small breasts, restore breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss, or correct breast asymmetry. This procedure is safe, effective and a very meaningful improvement for our patients.
The first step is a Consultation with Dr. Connors. This includes an examination and discussion of various options. Size, type and style of implant, as well as incision location and placement of implant, are among the topics covered in the Consultation. Saline, as well as Silicone Gel-Filled*, implants are available at this time. We believe in Physician-led discussion and teaching about the differences between Saline and Silicone* implants in order to help patients make confident decisions about breast augmentation.
*Silicone Gel-filled Breast Implants are available to women 22 years and older.
This procedure is performed in our JCAHO-accredited office surgical facility as an out-patient under General Anesthesia . Recovery is quite reasonable and brief, especially in view of the many subsequent years of enjoyment that the results bring about.
Reasons for Considering Breast Augmentation:
-
Enhance body shape if breasts are too small.
-
Increase breast volume after pregnancy and nursing.
-
Improve breast contour after weight loss.
-
Equalize a difference in breast size (cup size) to gain breast symmetry.
Breast Implants: Saline and Silicone* Breast Implants are available .
General Procedure
Breast augmentation involves making a small incision near the crease under the breast that will be the pathway for inserting the breast implant. During surgery, the breast tissue is raised to create an open pocket under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. Inserting an implant behind each breast can increase a woman's breast size by one or more bra cup sizes. Saline Implants contain a sterile saline solution (similar to saltwater); the new-generation silicone gel-filled* implant is an implant shell of silicone elastomer (rubber) filled with silicone gel. Surgery typically lasts from 1 to 3 hours.
Recovery Process
Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest, limiting heavy lifting and vigorous exercise to insure proper healing. A support bra is recomended for the first two weeks. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with the surgery. This pain can be treated effectively with oral medication. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the directions given by the physician after surgery.
