Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

ABDOMINOPLASTY
We all desire a flat abdomen but pregnancies, heredity, previous surgery and weight fluctuations are the enemies in this battle. However, a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) is an excellent answer to achieve a flatter and tighter stomach.  Although abdominoplasty is a very popular procedure for women, Dr. Connors has achieved positive results in men.

This more extensive surgery is most often performed under general anesthesia.   Recuperation usually takes several weeks of rest, and additional time must be allowed to see the final results. The length of time for recovery varies greatly depending on the extent of the abdominoplasty and the physical condition of the patient.  Return to work is often possible in two to four weeks.  The results of a tummy tuck can remain for many years, if there is no significant weight gain or the patient does not become pregnant.

In some individuals, localized fat may be the primary reason for abdominal contour changes.  For these situations, liposuction alone may be the indicated treatment.  Recovery from this procedure is less involved and briefer than for a tummy tuck.

When surgical treatment of abdominal skin and muscle is required then the tummy tuck is needed.  There are variations to this procedure and some liposuction is often included depending on the individual situation.  This procedure removes excess skin and fat and strengthens the weakened abdominal muscles.  The amount of loose and redundant skin determines the incision length and pattern.

The resultant scar softens and settles over several months.  It is usually low in the abdomen and well concealed in clothes and selected swim attire.  The vast majority of tummy tuck patients consider the scar a very reasonable trade for the marked improvement in abdominal flatness and firmness.  Those women with prior caesarian section scars can usually have them incorporated in the new scar.

Tummy Tuck patients are very excited with their improved contour.  It often motivates them to do more with their own exercise and nutrition programs.

Indications for Surgery:

  • Loose, sagging skin in abdominal region
  • Excess localized fat in the abdominal area
  • Weakened abdominal muscles due to pregnancy, weight loss or aging
  •

General Procedure

Abdominoplasty surgery lasts anywhere from one to five hours, depending on the desired look and the patient’s unique physiology.  The procedure is performed under General Anesthesia.  To begin the procedure, an incision is made just above the pubic bone area.  This incision goes horizontally across the lower abdomen.   The skin is then stretched away from the muscle tissue, and excess skin, fat and tissue is removed.  The abdominal muscles are tightened to provide a firmly contoured stomach.  Sometimes the procedure requires an additional incision around the navel in order to provide the best results.  There may be variations to this approach depending on the indications for surgery.

Recovery Process

Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and restriction of activities in order to allow for proper healing.  As the body recuperates, the patient can expect some swelling, pain, and discomfort.  Medication can be prescribed to relieve postoperative discomfort. The stitches will be removed in stages shortly after the surgery depending on the procedure(s) involved.  A gradual return to normal activities can generally be resumed within two to three weeks.  Changes are visible immediately after the surgery, but it may take up to a year for the body to completely adapt to the new abdominal configuration.  With proper diet and exercise the striking results of the surgery will be long lasting.
